Everyone assumes the To field is where you tell email where to go. Here's the twist: it isn't. Your email was already routed before that field mattered at all.

The To field is the address you see when you open a message, something like captain@deepcurrent.io. It's a label written for humans. Think of a letter: the To field is the "Dear Alex" at the top of the page, not the address on the envelope.

Actual delivery happens invisibly, during the conversation between mail servers, with a command called RCPT TO. The server issues one for every recipient, including CC and BCC. By the time the To field is written into the message, the route is already set.

This split matters when something goes wrong. If someone says "I sent it to the right address but it went somewhere else," the To field is never the culprit. Look at the server or platform settings instead. Most ESPs like Mailchimp or Brevo keep both in sync for you, so you only feel this if you're sending through raw SMTP.
