Do I need a VMC for BIMI?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Short answer: it depends on your mailbox provider strategy. Gmail demands a VMC if you want your logo to show. Apple Mail accepts self-asserted logos or Common Mark Certificates (CMC) without a full VMC. Yahoo allows unverified logos for some senders, though it checks your reputation first.
Here's where the decision gets real. If you're trying to reach everyone uniformly across inboxes, you'll need a VMC. But if your audience skews toward Apple Mail users or you're testing BIMI without heavy Gmail presence, you might skip it for now. The cost is $1,500 to $3,000 annually, which isn't trivial. That's a legitimate business trade-off, especially if you're an SMB.
One more thing to consider: you can't implement BIMI anywhere without DMARC at enforcement level. So before spending on a VMC, make sure your domain's DMARC is already set to quarantine or reject. That's the real heavy lifter for your sender reputation anyway.
What's your next move? Check what BIMI actually requires and whether your sending profile justifies the investment right now.
