Does SPF improve deliverability by itself?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Not really. And it's worth understanding why, because "just set up SPF" is common advice that sets the wrong expectations.

SPF authorizes which servers are allowed to send email on your behalf. Passing SPF tells receiving servers: "this message came from a server the domain owner approved." That's a trust floor, not a performance boost.

Not having SPF, or failing SPF, actively hurts deliverability. Messages without valid SPF are more likely to be filtered or rejected. So SPF matters, but it's defensive. It prevents a deliverability penalty rather than earning a deliverability reward.

What actually moves the needle: sender reputation, list hygiene, and engagement. Mailbox providers care deeply about whether your recipients open your emails, mark them as spam, and engage over time. SPF doesn't influence any of that directly.

Think of it this way: SPF is the minimum required to get in the room. It doesn't help you make a good impression once you're there. You also need DKIM and DMARC aligned for a complete authentication posture. Even then, authentication is table stakes. Your sending history, complaint rate, and subscriber engagement are what move your reputation in the long run.

You can verify your SPF record is configured correctly with our free Review My Emails SPF Checker. It'll tell you whether your record is valid and which sources it authorizes.

Diagnose my deliverability issues

I've set up SPF for {domain} and I'm trying to understand whether it should be improving my open rates or inbox placement rates. My current SPF record includes {esp_name} and {other_sources}. I'm seeing {current_deliverability_issue}. Can you help me understand whether the issue is authentication-related or something else like sender reputation or list quality?
