What does 454 mean?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

You hit send, and instead of a clean delivery, you get back a 454. It's one of those errors that sounds alarming but usually means "not right now" rather than "never." Here's what's actually happening.

A 454 is a temporary SMTP error tied to authentication or encryption. The receiving server tried to set up a TLS (Transport Layer Security) handshake or verify credentials, and something fell apart mid-handshake. Because it's a 4xx error, it's temporary. The mail can be retried and may go through once the underlying issue clears.

Common messages you'll see paired with 454:

  • "454 TLS not available due to temporary reason"
  • "454 Temporary authentication failure"
  • "454 Try again later"

The three most common causes are a TLS negotiation failure (the encryption setup didn't complete before the connection timed out), a certificate problem on the receiving server (expired, mismatched, or self-signed), or the receiving server's authentication backend being temporarily unavailable so it can't verify credentials at all.

Most of the time, 454 is a problem on the receiving end, not yours. A standard retry with normal backoff (wait a few minutes, try again) will often clear it once the other server recovers.

If you're seeing 454 consistently and retries aren't helping, it's worth checking a few things on your side. Make sure your sending setup supports TLS and that your certificates are valid and up to date. If you're relaying through an ESP, check whether their SMTP configuration matches what the receiving server expects. Persistent 454s from the same destination are worth flagging to your ESP's support team, since they may need to investigate the connection at the infrastructure level.
