How to interpret Gmail’s “rate limit exceeded” message?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Your sending suddenly stops and you see "rate limit exceeded" in your logs. This isn't a permanent block. It's Gmail telling you that you've hit a sending threshold. But what threshold exactly, and how do you recover?

What the error actually means: You've sent more emails than Gmail thinks is normal for your account or IP in a given period. This could be within an hour, a day, or across your account lifetime depending on your reputation. Gmail doesn't publish exact limits because they vary by sender reputation and account history.

The most common error codes are 421 4.7.0 (temporary rate limiting, try again later), 421 4.7.28 (your IP reputation is low, so you're being rate limited more aggressively), and 550 5.7.1 (you're blocked due to content or reputation issues, not just rate limiting). The 421 errors are temporary and should clear on their own. The 550 is different and requires reputation recovery.

What triggers rate limits: Sending more than a few hundred emails per hour from a new or low-reputation account, poor DKIM or SPF setup, high spam complaint rates from recent campaigns, and most importantly, low engagement. If recipients ignore, delete, or report your mail, Gmail punishes you faster.

Recovery steps: Stop sending immediately (don't try to push through). Check Google Postmaster Tools for your reputation status and any complaint or bounce spikes. Verify your SPF and authentication setup. Reduce your volume significantly for the next 3 to 5 days, focusing only on engaged recipients. Then gradually ramp back up as your reputation recovers.

Rate limits are a warning system. Ignoring them and continuing to send at high volume usually leads to harder blocks where Gmail either throttles you to one email per minute or silently drops your mail into spam. Start here with authentication and engagement audits using a DMARC report to understand what's happening in your recent sends.

I got a 421 rate limit error from Gmail. How much can I actually send per day, and how long before I can resume? Should I focus on my IP reputation or account reputation first? Is this specific to my domain or affecting my whole Google Workspace?
