How many domains should I use?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

It's one of those questions that sounds simple until you actually sit down to answer it. One domain? Five? The honest answer is: it depends on how many emails you're sending, how much risk you can absorb, and how much time you have to manage things properly.

Here's the practical framework. A fresh domain should never send more than 20 to 50 emails a day during its warmup period. Once it's established, you can push that to around 100 to 150 daily without much stress. So your volume target is the best starting point for estimating how many domains you actually need.

  • Under 100 emails a day: One domain is usually enough. Two gives you a backup if one gets flagged.
  • 100 to 500 emails a day: Two to four domains spread the load and protect you if one takes a hit to its reputation.
  • 500+ emails a day: Four to six or more, depending on how aggressive your sending is.

The reason people use multiple domains isn't just volume. It's isolation. If one domain picks up complaints or lands on a blocklist, the others keep running while you sort it out. That's the real value, not just raw sending capacity.

That said, more domains is not automatically better. Every domain needs proper authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), a careful warmup, and ongoing monitoring. A pile of neglected domains is worse than one well-managed one. (Managing six poorly maintained domains will hurt you more than managing two tight ones.)

A practical rule of thumb: take your daily volume target, divide by 30 to 40 (the safe daily limit per domain while you're still building reputation), and that gives you a rough starting count. Most small operations land between two and three domains. Mid-sized senders doing serious outreach usually settle around four to five.
