What tools can help with prospecting?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
You need email addresses for cold outreach. Where do you actually find them? And once you've got a list, how do you know they're real before you send? There's a tool (or several) for each part of the job.
Finding contact data is its own category. Hunter.io is the workhorse for email finding. You give it a domain, it digs up email addresses and verifies them. ZeroBounce and NeverBounce (now ZeroBounce) are built specifically for verification. They check if an email actually exists before you send. Some people use LinkedIn Sales Navigator to identify who they want to reach, then use an email finder to get their address. That combo works, but it takes longer.
B2B data platforms do bulk prospecting. Apollo, ZoomInfo, and Clearbit all give you company data plus contact information. They vary in accuracy and depth. Apollo works well if you're starting a campaign from scratch and need both a list and built-in email sequencing. ZoomInfo is pricier but includes more data if you're doing enterprise sales. Clearbit focuses on enrichment (adding missing data to contacts you already have) and integrates well with your CRM if you've got one.
The verification question is important. You can find 10,000 emails in a day. But if half of them bounce, you've just nuked your sender reputation. Verify before you send. Use a dedicated verification tool, or pick a finder that includes verification. It costs a bit more but it's worth it.
Your choice depends on a few things: Are you finding individual prospects or building a whole list? Do you need technographic data (what software they use) or just emails? How big's your budget? Are you selling to a specific industry or company size? Start with Hunter if you're doing manual prospecting at small scale. Jump to Apollo or ZoomInfo if you're doing volume sales. And always verify before hitting send.
One last thing: just because a tool gives you a list doesn't mean you should send to all of them immediately. List hygiene practices matter, even with verified data. GDPR and CAN-SPAM rules require that cold outreach has a real opt-in or legitimate business reason. Verification tools check if an email exists, not if the person consented. That's on you.
