What are the risks of using third-party data enrichment services?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Data enrichment services add information to your subscriber records from external databases. company size, job title, social profiles, demographic data. It can make your targeting sharper. It also creates real compliance exposure that's easy to underestimate.

Consent chain problems: Your subscriber opted in to receive emails from you. They didn't consent to you combining their data with third-party information about them. Under GDPR, if you're processing additional personal data about someone. even data that's technically "public". you need a lawful basis for that processing. "We found it on LinkedIn" isn't a lawful basis.

Data quality and accuracy risks: Enrichment data is often outdated, incorrect, or inferred rather than stated. If you segment on enriched data (targeting by job title or industry) and the enrichment data is wrong, you're sending to the wrong audiences and making decisions based on bad signals. Some enrichment vendors update data infrequently.

Third-party processor obligations: Under GDPR, if an enrichment service is processing your subscribers' personal data on your behalf, you need a Data Processing Agreement (DPA) with them. Many email marketers don't know this and don't have these agreements in place.

Data subject rights complexity: When someone submits a SAR or requests erasure, the enriched data needs to be included in your response and deleted from the enrichment provider's records (or your record of what they provided). If you can't cascade a deletion request to your enrichment vendor, you have incomplete compliance.

Enrichment can be worth it. but go in with eyes open. Check that your enrichment vendor has a DPA, understand what lawful basis covers the enriched processing (legitimate interest with a proper assessment is the usual approach), and make sure you can handle SARs and erasure requests that include enriched data.

For the documentation side of this, see data source documentation. For the broader risks of third-party data, see whether consent can be inherited or transferred.

Help me assess data enrichment compliance risks

I'm considering using a data enrichment service to add company size and job title to my subscriber records. I send marketing emails to a list of about size contacts, some in the EU. What compliance risks do I need to address, and what should I ask the vendor before signing up?
