What are the pros and cons of SOI?

Single opt-in's biggest win is conversion. You remove the friction of a confirmation email, so more people complete signup. Studies show double opt-in drops your final subscriber count by 20-40%. With SOI, they're on your list immediately and can receive welcome messages or promised incentives right away. That speed matters if you're signing people up for something happening the same day, like a webinar.

The downside is real. Without confirmation, your list picks up typo addresses (someone fat-fingered their email), bots (automated junk signups), and spam trap hits (old addresses ISPs recycle to catch careless senders). These problems accumulate over time. Bounces climb, complaints spike, and ISPs start distrusting your mail. Your reputation suffers.

There's also a compliance wrinkle. CAN-SPAM technically allows SOI, but proving that someone actually wanted to subscribe gets tougher if they dispute it later. You only have form data, not verification. Under GDPR, where consent must be clear and provable, SOI creates a risky position (of course, easier said than done).

Bottom line: SOI wins on quantity but loses on quality. It works only if your signup sources are squeaky clean and you're religious about list hygiene. If you're buying lists or running untargeted ads, SOI will hurt you.
