How do link tracking parameters affect CTA URLs?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
You're trying to track email performance, so you add UTM codes to your CTA link. But now the URL's a string of parameters that looks suspicious. That's the trade-off with tracking. You need attribution data, but poorly handled tracking parameters can actually hurt your deliverability and click-through rates.
Here's what goes wrong: Super long URLs can trigger spam filter suspicions because they look like obfuscated links. Multiple layers of redirect tracking add latency, which kills the user experience and sends off trust signals that some filters flag. Generic link shorteners like bit.ly or tinyurl have reputational baggage. They're associated with malware distribution, so use your own domain for any redirects instead. And make sure every single redirect in the chain is HTTPS. Mixed protocol chains (HTTP then HTTPS) look broken and untrustworthy.
The best move? Use your Review My Emails built-in tracking instead of stacking third-party parameters on top. Learn how ESPs handle UTM parameters differently than generic link shorteners. Check out how URL length impacts your inbox placement, and read best practices for redirect chains.
