How do you write for skim readers vs detailed readers?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Most subscribers do both. They'll skim your email in 5 seconds, then either delete it or come back for details later. So write for both at once.

The trick is layered content. Your headlines, bolded phrases, and CTA should tell a complete story on their own. Someone scanning for 3 seconds should get it. Someone with 2 minutes to read should find substance worth their time.

Make your headlines clear and direct. "New feature available" beats clever-but-vague every time. Section subheads should describe what's below without forcing readers to read body copy. Bold your key insight in each paragraph, but make that bolded phrase meaningful on its own (not just the first sentence ripped out of context).

Organize with conclusion first, supporting details second. Put your most important point in the opening, not buried at the bottom. That serves skimmers who need to know the headline. It also respects detail readers who want to understand the full picture; they'll read the body copy that explains it.

White space matters more than you think. Short sections with gaps between them feel scannable. Dense paragraphs feel like work. Break up long thoughts across multiple short paragraphs instead of one long block.

And make your CTA visible without scrolling. If someone's in a hurry and ready to click, they shouldn't have to hunt for it. Place it where a skimmer naturally stops.

Test it yourself: print your email and glance at it for 3 seconds. Did you grasp the main point? If yes, you've nailed it for both types of readers.
