How do they differ from ESP dashboards?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Your ESP dashboard is useful. It tells you who opened, who clicked, who bounced, and who unsubscribed. That's solid campaign-level data, and for many senders it's enough to get started.

But there are things your ESP dashboard can't tell you. It doesn't know whether your emails actually landed in the inbox or the spam folder. It doesn't know how your Gmail recipients are engaging versus your Outlook recipients. And if you're sending through more than one platform (say, Klaviyo for marketing and Postmark for transactional), each dashboard shows only its own slice of the picture.

That's where dedicated analytics tools come in. They sit above your ESP and pull together a broader view. A few things they add that your ESP won't show you:

  • Inbox placement data tells you whether your emails landed in the inbox, spam, or another folder, not just whether the server accepted delivery. These are very different things.
  • Cross-ESP visibility combines data from multiple sending platforms so you can see your full program in one place.
  • Engagement decay tracking shows you when subscriber engagement is gradually declining, which is often invisible in per-campaign metrics that look fine individually.
  • Revenue attribution connects email activity to business outcomes, so you can see what a campaign actually drove, not just that someone clicked a link.

The short version: ESP dashboards tell you what happened with a send. Analytics tools help you understand what's happening across your whole program over time, and why. One optimizes individual campaigns. The other shapes strategy.

Not sure if your setup needs a dedicated analytics layer? If you're sending through a single ESP and your deliverability looks healthy, the dashboard might be enough for now. If you're running into engagement decay you can't explain, or you want to know what's really happening at inbox level, it's worth digging deeper. See what your ESP is missing

I send email through ESP name. Tell me which metrics I can see in my ESP dashboard and which ones would require a separate analytics tool. My list size is roughly list size and I'm currently tracking metrics you care about. Flag any gaps I might be missing.
