What’s Google Postmaster Tools vs ESP analytics?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Your ESP tells you what happened from your side of the wall. Gmail tells you what happened on theirs. That's the core difference between Google Postmaster Tools and your ESP's analytics, and why you actually need both.

Postmaster Tools shows you how Gmail itself rates your sending. That includes your domain reputation, your IP reputation, your spam rate as Gmail measures it, authentication pass/fail rates, and delivery errors. This is Gmail's internal scorecard. Your ESP has no access to it.

Your ESP's analytics show you what you sent, who received it (across all mailbox providers, not just Gmail), and how people engaged. Open rates, clicks, bounces, unsubscribes. It's a broad view of your whole program, not a deep look at what any one mailbox provider thinks of you.

Think of it this way. Your ESP can tell you that 94% of emails to Gmail addresses were accepted. Postmaster Tools can tell you that your domain reputation is sitting at "Low" and Gmail is quietly routing some of those accepted emails to spam before you'd ever know. (That gap is exactly where senders get caught off guard.)

Use Postmaster Tools when you're troubleshooting Gmail-specific problems, watching your reputation after a big campaign, or checking whether your authentication is actually passing at Gmail. Use your ESP analytics for day-to-day program management, comparing campaigns, and tracking overall engagement.

They're not competing tools. One shows the outside view, the other shows yours. Run them together.

I send emails through my ESP and I can see open rates and delivery stats there. Someone mentioned I should also be checking Google Postmaster Tools. What does Postmaster Tools show me that my ESP doesn't? And do I actually need both, or is one enough?
