What’s the difference between validation and verification?

If you've ever stared at a tool that calls itself a "verifier" and another that calls itself a "validator" and wondered if they're the same thing, you're not alone. The terms get mixed up constantly, even by ESPs that should know better.

Here's the practical difference: validation is a pre-send check. It looks at an address and asks whether it could work. Is the syntax correct? Does the domain exist? Does the mailbox appear to be there? It doesn't send anything. It's making an educated prediction based on technical signals.

Verification is a post-send confirmation. It asks whether the address actually received something. The clearest example is double opt-in. You send a confirmation email and someone clicks the link to confirm they got it. That's verification. You now know the address is real, reachable, and attached to a human who wanted to hear from you.

In practice, most tools marketed as "email verification" are actually doing validation (checking syntax, domains, and sometimes SMTP pings). The naming is genuinely inconsistent across the industry, so don't get too hung up on the label. Look at what the tool actually does.

The rule of thumb is simple. Validate before you send, to catch the addresses most likely to bounce. Verify through your signup flow, to confirm real humans are on your list. They work at different stages and aren't substitutes for each other.
