What are smaller mailbox providers (ProtonMail, Zoho, GMX, Yandex, etc.)?

Most senders obsess over Gmail and Yahoo, which makes sense. But your list almost certainly has subscribers on smaller mailbox providers too, and those inboxes have their own filtering logic, their own thresholds, and their own quirks.

Here's a quick map of who's who:

• ProtonMail is built around privacy and end-to-end encryption. It tends to be stricter about authentication and is popular with privacy-conscious users across Europe and North America.
• Zoho Mail targets businesses using the Zoho productivity suite. You'll find it on custom business domains, which means it's often where smaller companies receive their work email.
• GMX and Web.de dominate German-speaking markets. If you send to audiences in Germany, Austria, or Switzerland, these two are not optional to think about.
• Yandex Mail serves Russia and several neighboring countries. It has its own spam filters and its own reputation signals, separate from anything Western providers use.

Each of these runs independent infrastructure. They generally follow the same authentication standards as the big three, but how strictly they enforce those standards varies.
