Does warming up fix everything?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Warming up is one of those fixes that sounds like it should solve everything. New domain, fresh IP, clean slate, right? Not quite. Warmup builds reputation for new or rested infrastructure. It doesn't erase the reasons your reputation got damaged in the first place.
Think of it this way. If you've been sending to unengaged subscribers, getting high complaint rates, or hammering inboxes without proper authentication in place, those are the root problems. Warming up on top of them just spreads the same issues more slowly across a fresh infrastructure. Mailbox providers are watching the signals your sends generate, not the ramp schedule you follow.
So what actually needs to happen before you warm up? A few things worth checking off first.
- Fix your authentication. SPF, DKIM, and DMARC need to be properly set up on your sending domain. Skipping this before warmup is like setting sail with a hole in the hull.
- Clean your list. Remove addresses that have been bouncing, people who haven't opened anything in 6 to 12 months, and anything that looks like a spam trap. Sending to a messy list during warmup poisons the new reputation before it's even built. (We clean lists if you need a hand ;))
- Identify what caused the damage. Was it complaint rates? Bounce rates? Sending to people who never opted in? Figure out the actual cause, otherwise you'll repeat it on the new infrastructure.
- Start with your most engaged subscribers. When you do warm up, begin with the people most likely to open, click, and not complain. Their positive signals set the tone for how mailbox providers view the new sending setup.
Once those pieces are in place, warmup works as intended. It lets you build a positive sending history gradually, so that when you scale up, Gmail, Outlook, and others have enough signal to trust your domain. But it's the clean foundation that makes the warmup matter. Without it, you're just warming up a problem.
