Does expensive software mean better inboxing?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Here's a sales pitch you've probably heard: "Our platform has enterprise-grade deliverability baked in." And here's the truth: no software, at any price, can inbox your emails for you. The mailbox provider decides where your email lands, and it doesn't care what you paid for your ESP.

That doesn't mean tool choice is irrelevant. More expensive platforms often come with features that make good practices easier to execute. Things like automated authentication setup, built-in engagement scoring, suppression list management, and detailed deliverability monitoring. But those features only help if you actually use them correctly.

A MailerLite account with clean SPF and DKIM records, a healthy list, and good engagement will outperform a Salesforce Marketing Cloud account blasting to an unvalidated list full of disengaged contacts. The tool didn't fail. The practices did.

What actually moves the needle on deliverability has nothing to do with price tier:

  • SPF, DKIM, and DMARC properly configured on your sending domain
  • A permission-based list with real, engaged subscribers
  • Regular list cleaning to remove invalid addresses and non-openers
  • Consistent sending patterns that don't spike unexpectedly
  • Low complaint rates (below 0.08% at Google, or you're heading for trouble)

The honest question to ask before buying a more expensive tool isn't "will this improve my inboxing?" It's "does this platform have the specific features I need, and will I actually use them?" Sometimes the answer is yes. Sometimes you're paying for a dashboard you'll ignore while your fundamentals stay broken.

Not sure if your current setup is the real problem? Check your ESP's deliverability dashboard with a grain of salt, and run your domain through our free blocklist checker to see if there's something more concrete going on.
