Mailbox providers like Gmail and Outlook watch engagement signals closely. Opens, clicks, replies, and even moves to the inbox all feed into your sender reputation. When a big chunk of your list never responds to anything, those low engagement rates tell providers that your emails aren't wanted. Over time, that pushes more of your mail toward spam, even for the subscribers who do want to hear from you.

Most deliverability practitioners treat 90 days of zero engagement as a yellow flag and 180 days as a red one. Six months of silence is the point where many senders start suppressing contacts. That said, this varies by industry. A tax software company might reasonably email someone once a year and see normal opens. A daily deal newsletter sending to someone who hasn't opened in 90 days has a problem.

The spam trap risk is real too. When an address gets abandoned long enough, some providers and blocklist operators recycle it into a spam trap. There's no exact public timeline for when this happens (it varies by provider), but continued mailing to a cold list you haven't touched in a year or more carries genuine risk.

What to do instead:

  • Set a sunset policy that automatically suppresses contacts who haven't engaged after a defined window (90 to 180 days is a reasonable range for most senders).
  • Segment before you send. Pulling your active openers into a separate segment and sending to them first protects your reputation while you figure out what to do with the rest.
