Does “warming” never end?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Here's a question that trips up a lot of senders: you've been warming for six weeks, things feel stable, and you're wondering if you'll be doing this forever. The short answer is no. Warming has a real finish line.

You've completed the warmup phase when three things line up. You're consistently hitting your target daily sending volume. Your open rates and engagement are holding steady (not climbing, not dropping). And you're not seeing placement issues or sudden bounce spikes. That usually happens somewhere between four and eight weeks for new IP or domain infrastructure, though it depends on your list quality and how gradually you ramp.

Once you're there, you shift into maintenance mode. That's a different thing entirely. Maintenance means keeping your sending consistent, responding quickly to any dips in engagement, and not letting your list go cold. You're not re-warming. You're just being a good sender on an ongoing basis.

The catch is that big changes can reset the clock. If you're on a warmed IP and you suddenly triple your daily volume, that's new territory for your reputation. Mailbox providers like Gmail and Outlook don't have enough signal to trust the new volume yet, so you'll need to ramp up to it, the same way you did originally. Think of it as a mini-warmup rather than starting from scratch.

The same applies if your reputation takes a significant hit, say from a sudden drop in inbox placement or a spike in spam complaints. Getting back to a healthy baseline requires rebuilding trust, and that takes consistent effort over time.

So warming does end. What never ends is the basic work of sending in ways that keep subscribers engaged. That part is just good email.

I'm warming a new IP address / sending domain and I've been at it for X weeks. Tell me: based on my current open rate / bounce rate / daily volume, am I done warming or do I still need to ramp? Also flag any signs I should watch for that would mean I need a mini-warmup.
