What volume is needed before using a dedicated IP?

The number most ESPs and deliverability experts cite is 100,000 to 200,000 emails per month. That's not arbitrary. It's roughly the minimum volume needed for mailbox providers to build a stable, reliable picture of your sending behavior. The math: if you're sending 10,000 emails a month, those messages spread thin across hundreds of recipient domains. Each domain sees a handful of emails from you, which isn't enough data to evaluate your reputation with confidence. At 100,000+, the patterns become clearer, and mailbox providers can make better decisions about where your mail belongs.
Consistency matters as much as raw volume. Sending 200,000 emails in January and then nothing for two months performs worse than 50,000 per month sent reliably. Dedicated IPs need regular activity to stay warm. Extended quiet periods let reputation signals decay, and when you start sending again, you're partly starting over. If your sending is seasonal or irregular, a shared pool may serve you better even at higher volumes.
The other factor is your list quality. A dedicated IP with a clean 80,000-subscriber list and 30% open rates will outperform one with 300,000 disengaged subscribers and 2% opens. Volume thresholds assume your underlying list hygiene is solid. If your metrics are weak, adding a dedicated IP doesn't help. Fix the list first.
