What does “user unknown” mean?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

"User unknown" is the mail server's way of saying "there's no mailbox here by that name." It's one of the most common hard bounce messages you'll encounter, and it's as definitive as bounce messages get. The address doesn't exist on that server and it's not going to exist if you retry.

The SMTP response code is typically 550, sometimes with a message like "550 5.1.1 The email account that you tried to reach does not exist" (that's Gmail's version) or "550 User unknown" from older mail server software.

Why do you get user unknown bounces? A few common reasons:

  • The subscriber typed their address incorrectly at signup (captain@harborpst.net instead of captain@harborpost.net)
  • The subscriber used a fake address to access a download or discount
  • The person left their company and IT deleted the account
  • The account was closed due to inactivity or policy violation
  • The address was fabricated (data append, purchased list, scraped contact)

The right response: remove the address immediately from your active list and add it to your suppression list so it doesn't slip back in through a re-import. Don't send a second time to see if it resolves. It won't.

If you're seeing a lot of user-unknown bounces after importing a list or re-engaging old contacts, that's usually list decay at work. Email addresses churn at roughly 20-25% per year. A list you haven't mailed in 18 months has likely lost a quarter of its valid addresses. Validate before sending to any dormant segment to catch these before they hit your bounce rate.
