What are the risks of partner lists or data appends?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Partner lists and data appends can feel like a shortcut to a bigger audience. They're also one of the fastest ways to damage your sending reputation. Here's what you're actually taking on.
The consent problem. When someone signed up with a partner, they agreed to hear from that partner. They did not agree to hear from you. Under GDPR in Europe and CASL in Canada, sending to contacts you don't have direct permission to contact isn't just a reputation risk. It's a legal one. Even under the more permissive CAN-SPAM rules in the US, you're on shaky ground if recipients start complaining. And they will, because they don't recognize your name.
The data quality problem. Partner lists and appended data are frequently stale. Email addresses decay at roughly 20-30% per year. If the list was assembled six months ago, a meaningful chunk of it is already invalid. Invalid addresses generate hard bounces. Hard bounces above 2% per send trigger ISP filtering. Data appends (where someone builds a list by guessing email formats like firstname.lastname@company.com) introduce addresses that were never real to begin with.
The spam trap problem. Purchased and partner lists are disproportionately likely to contain pristine spam traps: addresses that never belonged to a real person and exist specifically to catch senders who mail without proper consent. One trap hit can get your domain listed on major blocklists within hours. Recovery typically takes weeks.
Role accounts and graymail. Lists of business contacts often contain info@, sales@, support@, and similar role addresses. These are typically managed by teams, not individuals, which means engagement is unpredictable and complaints are more likely. They also won't know who you are.
If you've already sent to a partner or appended list and things have gone sideways, validate what's left of it before you send again. Our list cleaning service can flag the highest-risk addresses before they do more damage. Or if you're mid-crisis, reach out and we'll help you triage.
