How can I track the quality of different acquisition sources?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Not all signups are equal. Someone who found your signup form through a Google search behaves differently from someone who joined because of a giveaway or a paid social ad. Treating all of them the same is how senders end up with lists that look big but perform poorly.

The core technique: tag every subscriber with their source at signup. Most ESPs let you add a custom field (something like "signup_source") that you populate with a value like "organic-footer", "paid-facebook", "webinar-2026-04", or "partner-acme". Then you can segment by source and compare how each group performs over time.

If your signup process goes through a web form, UTM parameters in the URL are the cleaner way to do this automatically. Add ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=cta&utm_campaign=spring-launch to your signup link and your CRM or analytics tool can pass that data through to the subscriber record. Tools like Mailchimp, Klaviyo, and ActiveCampaign all support this with varying degrees of automation.

Once you have source data, compare these metrics by segment:

  • Bounce rate by source: High bounces from one source means either bad data or bad acquisition practices there.
  • Complaint rate by source: Disproportionate complaints from a segment tells you something about consent quality.
  • Open and click rate at 30/60/90 days post-signup: New subscribers who don't engage quickly rarely improve. Spot this by source early.
  • Unsubscribe rate by source: High unsubscribes suggest the source attracted people who weren't a good fit.

Over time you'll get a clear picture of which acquisition channels bring genuinely interested subscribers and which inflate your list without adding value. That insight is worth more than any single campaign test.

If you're not sure how to set this up in your specific ESP, ask us and we'll point you in the right direction for your platform.

I read this on the Email Almanac about tracking acquisition source quality. Help me set this up for my specific situation: 1. How do I add source tracking to my current signup flow? 2. Which metrics should I focus on given my list size and send frequency? 3. How long should I wait before making decisions about a source? My details: - ESP: e.g. Mailchimp, Klaviyo, ActiveCampaign, ConvertKit - Signup method: web form / API / manual import / mixed - Current acquisition sources: organic / paid social / webinars / referrals / other - Whether I'm currently tagging sources: yes / no / partially - List size: total contacts - Average monthly new signups: e.g. 500/month - Current bounce rate: e.g. 1.8% - Current complaint rate: if known
