What is a disposable email provider?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

You're trying a new SaaS tool and you don't want to hand over your real email. So you head to Mailinator, grab a temporary inbox, sign up with that, and never check it again. That's what a disposable email provider does. It generates instant, temporary inboxes that expire in minutes or hours. No signup, no login, no long-term commitment.

Why does this matter to you? Because people use these services to sign up for your emails without commitment. They want the freebie or the trial. They're not interested in your long-term content. That means they'll never open, never click, and the address expires after a few days. You mail to a dead inbox, you get a bounce, and mailbox providers see your bounce rate spike.

If your signup form doesn't screen for these addresses, you'll accumulate a lot of them. They're easy to spot during list validation because they're on known disposable domains. Harder to spot if you're not validating at all. And if you're sending to a high volume of them, your sender reputation drops because mailbox providers see bounces from a provider known for temporary inboxes.

Your defense is threefold. First, use double opt-in. Require the subscriber to confirm from their real email. Second, validate at signup. There are free lists of disposable domains you can check against. Third, validate your list before sending and remove known disposable addresses. Our free blocklist checker catches these, or if you need full list cleaning, our list cleaning service can flag and remove them at scale.
