What's the difference between real-time and bulk validation?

You're building a signup flow. Someone enters their email. You want to catch typos right then, before they complete the form. That's real-time validation. Now imagine you've got 100,000 addresses already in your CRM from the past two years. You can't validate each one at signup. That's where bulk validation comes in. It's the difference between guarding the door (real-time) versus auditing what's already inside (bulk).
Real-time validation runs instantly during a form submission or API call. The moment someone finishes typing their email, the system checks it. Valid? They proceed. Invalid or risky? You show a message asking them to fix it or re-enter. This catches problems at capture, when they're fresh and the subscriber can correct them themselves.
Bulk validation processes entire lists at once, usually overnight or on a schedule. You upload 100,000 addresses. The validation service chews through them all and scores each one. Valid, invalid, risky, spamtrap. You get a report and can decide what to do with each segment. It's how you clean lists you already own.
Here's the tradeoff. Real-time is preventative. It stops bad data from entering your system in the first place. But it only works on new signups, and it requires your signup form to support validation checks (most ESPs do, but some custom builds don't). Bulk validation cleans historical data, but it's a one-time or quarterly event, not continuous protection.
Most teams use both. Real-time validation on your signup forms keeps future list quality high. Bulk validation quarterly or twice a year to clean what you've already got. If your list is already pretty messy or you're inheriting data from an old system, start with bulk. If you're building a new flow from scratch, start with real-time to prevent the mess in the first place.
