What did Yahoo’s 2024 update introduce?

In early 2024, Yahoo Mail rolled out new sender requirements that landed at almost exactly the same time as Gmail's. That wasn't a coincidence. The two providers coordinated, and the message to senders was clear: these aren't suggestions, and you can't dodge them by optimizing for just one inbox.
Here's what Yahoo required from bulk senders:
- Email authentication. Valid SPF and DKIM records, plus a DMARC policy of at least
p=none. No authentication means no inbox. - One-click unsubscribe. A working
List-Unsubscribeheader that lets recipients opt out in a single tap. Yahoo expected requests to be honored within two days. - Spam complaint rate below 0.3%. That's the ceiling. Yahoo recommends staying well under 0.1% as a daily habit.
Yahoo was quick to point out that none of this was entirely new for them. They'd enforced similar principles for years. What changed in 2024 was that they formalized it, published it clearly, and aligned it with Gmail's rollout so senders couldn't treat one provider as a loophole.
One practical detail worth knowing: Yahoo Mail and AOL Mail share the same infrastructure under Yahoo Inc. That means compliance covers both audiences at once. If you're sending to any AOL addresses, the same rules apply.
If you're already following Gmail's bulk sender requirements, you're in good shape for Yahoo too. The specs line up closely enough that a single compliant setup covers both. The main thing to double-check is that your DMARC record is actually publishing and that your one-click unsubscribe is wired up correctly on every sending stream.
