What is email conversion rate?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Email conversion rate measures how many people who received (or opened, depending on how your ESP calculates it) your email went on to complete a specific action. That action is whatever you defined as the goal of the campaign.

The formula is: conversions divided by delivered messages (or opens), multiplied by 100. If you sent to 10,000 people and 150 made a purchase, your conversion rate is 1.5%.

What makes conversion rate different from open rate or click rate: it's the metric closest to actual business outcome. Opens tell you if people saw it. Clicks tell you if people were interested. Conversions tell you if your email accomplished its goal.

The tricky part is attribution. Someone clicks your email, spends three days thinking about it, then buys on their desktop after seeing a social media ad. Did email convert them? Depends on your attribution model. Most email attribution tracks conversions that happen within a certain time window after a click, typically 24 hours to 7 days. This means email's actual contribution to revenue is often undercounted, because some conversions that email influenced fall outside the attribution window or happen on a different device.

Typical conversion rates for marketing email range from 1-5%, with significant variation by industry, email type, and offer. Promotional emails and abandoned cart sequences tend to convert higher than newsletters. If you're optimizing for conversions, make sure your conversion tracking is set up correctly first. Improving conversion rates when your tracking is broken is just guesswork. Conversion rate feeds directly into your email ROI calculation, so getting it right matters.
