How can I improve my open rates?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
If your open rates have dropped (or never been where you want them), the first question to ask is: what's actually causing it? The answer changes what you should fix.
There are two separate buckets of problems that tank open rates, and they need different solutions.
Deliverability problems: Your emails aren't reaching the inbox at all. A broken or missing SPF, DKIM, or DMARC record, a damaged sender reputation from high bounces or complaints, or sending to a stale list full of unengaged contacts can all push you into spam or promotions. No subject line trick helps an email that's already filtered before anyone sees it.
Engagement problems: Emails are landing in the inbox, but nobody's opening them. Subject lines that don't earn a click in a crowded inbox, a From name subscribers don't recognize, sending too frequently to the wrong segment, or not sending frequently enough (so subscribers forget who you are). These need creative and strategic fixes, not technical ones.
Where to start: check your authentication first. Then look at list hygiene. An old list with a chunk of unengaged subscribers actively signals to mailbox providers that your content isn't worth showing. After that, test subject lines with a small segment before rolling out to everyone.
One more thing: open rate data has been unreliable since Apple Mail Privacy Protection launched in 2021. If a chunk of your list is on Apple Mail, your reported opens may be inflated or misleading. Factor that in before you panic about a drop.
