What is “per-recipient reporting”?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Per-recipient reporting gives you event data tied to individual subscribers, rather than campaign-level totals. Instead of "22% of your list opened this email," you get "captain@deepcurrent.io opened at 10:14 UTC, clicked link 3, and unsubscribed at 10:17."

That level of granularity matters for a few reasons. It lets you segment based on actual behavior, not just broad engagement buckets. It lets you trigger automations from specific subscriber actions. And it's the foundation of lifecycle management. It lets you know when individual subscribers are decaying before it shows up in your aggregate stats.

Most ESPs provide per-recipient data through their API or webhook event feeds. The difference is in how much detail they expose and for how long. Some platforms give you full event streams with timestamps, IP addresses, and user agents. Others give you just the top-line event (opened, clicked, bounced) without the metadata.

Per-recipient data also has a privacy dimension. Under GDPR and similar frameworks, event data tied to an identifiable person is personal data. That means it falls under retention, deletion, and access rights. If you're storing per-recipient click data indefinitely, that's something to review with your privacy policy.

For building good segmentation and cohort analysis, per-recipient reporting is what makes it meaningful. Aggregate data tells you how a campaign performed. Per-recipient data tells you who's worth re-engaging and who isn't.

Help me set up per-recipient tracking

I read about per-recipient reporting in email. Help me understand this for my setup: - ESP: e.g. Klaviyo, Mailchimp, SendGrid - What I want to do: [segment by behavior, trigger automations, lifecycle management?] - Do I currently have webhook event feeds set up? yes / no - Privacy considerations: GDPR, CCPA, or none? - List size: e.g. 20,000
