Think of it this way. There are two audiences judging your sending behavior, and they're using completely different scorecards.

Internal ESP reputation is how your sending platform sees you. Platforms like Mailchimp, Twilio SendGrid, or Mailgun track things like your bounce rates, spam complaint trends, and whether you're sending to clean lists. If your numbers look bad, they may throttle your sending speed, move you to a lower-quality shared IP pool, or flag your account for review. That's your internal reputation at work.

ISP-level reputation is how mailbox providers see you. Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo Mail build their own picture of your sending domain and IP based on engagement signals, complaint rates, and authentication health. This is what actually determines whether your emails land in the inbox or get buried in spam.

Here's the part that trips people up. The two reputations don't always move together. You can be in perfectly good standing with your ESP and still have terrible inbox placement if ISPs don't trust your domain. Your ESP is evaluating your risk to their platform. ISPs are evaluating your value to their users. Those aren't the same thing.

The reverse is also possible but less common. A sender with a strong ISP reputation who suddenly starts bouncing a lot or triggering abuse complaints may catch their ESP's attention before ISPs even notice. ESPs act fast to protect their own infrastructure.

The practical takeaway is to monitor both. Check your relationship with your ESP by watching for warnings, throttling signals, or pool changes. Check your ISP-level standing by tracking open rates by domain (Gmail vs Outlook vs Yahoo) and running periodic blocklist checks. If your Gmail open rate tanks while Outlook stays steady, that's an ISP-level problem, not an ESP one. If your account gets flagged by your platform, that's the other kind entirely.
