Your sender reputation isn't just about what you send. It's about who you send to. And if your list is full of dead addresses, disengaged contacts, or recycled spamtraps, mailbox providers will notice long before you do.

Here's how it plays out in practice.

Bounce rates signal list neglect. Every hard bounce is a message to the inbox provider that you're sending to addresses that don't exist anymore. A bounce rate above 2% is a red flag. Above 5%, and you're actively damaging your reputation with every campaign you send.

Spamtrap hits are silent reputation killers. Providers and blocklist operators seed old, abandoned email addresses into the wild and convert them into traps. If you're still mailing those addresses, it tells them you're either not cleaning your list or you're sourcing contacts in ways you shouldn't be. Even one hit can trigger a blocklist listing. Low engagement pulls your whole reputation down. Gmail, Outlook, and others track whether your subscribers are opening, clicking, and engaging. If you're sending to thousands of people who haven't touched your emails in a year, that inactivity is a signal too. Inactive recipients contribute to silent filtering, where your email just quietly disappears into spam without a bounce or complaint to warn you.

Complaint rates spike when people forget they signed up. Old lists and bought lists share the same problem. The people on them don't remember opting in, so when your email lands, they hit spam instead of unsubscribe. Mailbox providers watch complaint rates closely. Even 0.1% complaints to Gmail can start hurting your placement.

The fix isn't one-time. It's a rhythm. Remove hard bounces immediately after every send. Suppress anyone who hasn't engaged in the last 90 to 180 days (or at minimum, move them into a re-engagement campaign before removing them).
