What are Gmail-specific signs of distrust?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Your open rates just tanked. Your unsubscribes spiked. And Gmail is where it's worst. But what's actually happening under the hood?

Google Postmaster Tools is your window into Gmail's thinking. It's not perfect, but it's the closest thing you've got to Gmail's reputation scoreboard. The four metrics that matter most are domain reputation, IP reputation, spam rate, and authentication status. If any of these are declining, Gmail's losing trust in you.

What the signals actually mean: A dropping domain reputation usually points to engagement issues. Gmail weights engagement more heavily than any other ISP. It doesn't just care that you're sending mail; it cares whether people are opening, clicking, and moving your messages into their primary inbox (not the promotions tab). Your IP reputation follows a similar pattern. Authentication failures are their own beast, though. A broken SPF, DKIM, or DMARC record doesn't cause distrust gradually. It raises a flag immediately. Fix that first.

Look at your Gmail segment specifically: Pull your metrics for Gmail addresses only, not blended across all providers. Open rate drop for Gmail users is a sharper signal than an overall open rate decline. Same with unsubscribes. Gmail users unsubscribing more than Yahoo users? That's Gmail-specific, and it means something's off with how Gmail is filtering or presenting your mail.

Once you've identified which metric is actually tanking, you know where to aim your fix. Document what you see, then run a diagnostic. Our free DMARC parser can help if authentication's the culprit, but most Gmail distrust comes down to engagement. That's the expensive fix, but it's the right one.

I'm seeing open rates drop specifically for Gmail users, and I'm getting unsubscribes from that segment too. I logged into Google Postmaster Tools and I'm seeing [specific metric declining: domain reputation/IP reputation/authentication]. How do I know if it's a reputation issue, an engagement problem, or something I broke with my authentication setup? What should I check first?
