What is dynamic content in email?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Dynamic content is one email that shows different stuff to different readers based on what you know about them. One template, many rendered versions, sent in a single campaign. Saves the "create twelve versions of the same email" workflow and (when done right) lifts engagement without blowing up your build time.

How it's different from segmentation. Segmentation splits your list into groups and sends them separate emails. Dynamic content sends one email with blocks that swap based on rules. Most programs use both. See what segmentation is for the neighboring concept.

What it actually changes inside the email.

  • Product recommendations pulled from browse or purchase history.
  • Location-based offers showing the nearest store, local events, or region-specific shipping times.
  • Lifecycle content that swaps for new vs. returning customers.
  • Language and currency localized per recipient.
  • Pricing or plan info matching the subscriber's tier.

What it depends on. Two things. Data, and an ESP that can use it. You need the subscriber attributes populated (location, tier, last product viewed, language preference) either in your ESP or via integration with a CRM or commerce platform. No data, no dynamic. Garbage data, weird emails.

Common gotchas. Every dynamic block needs a fallback for "we don't know this value." Without one, you get dead zones in the email, or worse, "Hi {FirstName}" shipped to your whole list. See static vs. dynamic personalization tokens for the underlying syntax.

Start small. Pick one block (product recommendations or location) and run it for a month before adding more. Test rendering in Gmail, Outlook, and Apple Mail because conditional logic behaves differently across clients. And validate the underlying list with Review My Emails so dynamic content isn't wasted on addresses that bounce.

Scope my first dynamic content pilot

I send email through ESP to list size. My current emails are static. I want to start using dynamic content for use case, e.g., product recs, location-based offers. What subscriber data would I need populated first, and what's the smallest pilot I could run in the next 30 days?
