Rising unsubscribe rates are the clearest direct signal. If more people are leaving after each send, you're crossing the tolerance threshold for at least some of your audience. One spike might be a content issue. A steady upward trend over several sends is almost always a frequency problem.

Increasing complaint rates are more serious. Complaints directly damage your sender reputation with mailbox providers. The benchmark varies by industry, but anything above 0.1% complaints per send is worth investigating. If your complaint rate is climbing, reduce frequency before it reaches the point where providers start filtering you to spam.

Declining engagement rates over time even when content quality hasn't changed. If your open rate dropped from 28% to 16% over three months without a content or list change, frequency is likely the culprit. Subscribers are fatiguing and starting to ignore you rather than unsubscribe. This is actually worse for your deliverability than unsubscribes, because the silent non-opens still count against your engagement signals.

Growing percentage of unengaged subscribers. If you look at your list and a larger share than before hasn't clicked anything in 90 days, you may be training subscribers to tune out rather than engage. That's hard to reverse.

Survey or reply feedback. Direct "too many emails" responses or support tickets about email frequency are uncommon but unambiguous. When you get them, they usually represent a much larger silent group that's stopped engaging instead of speaking up.
