What is cross-sell vs upsell segmentation?

You've got two ways to make more from every customer. One adds breadth to their order. The other adds depth. Getting clear on which is which changes how you segment and what you message.
Cross sell: Recommend complementary products. Someone bought running shoes. Send them emails about socks, insoles, and moisture-wicking shirts. They bought a camera. Recommend lenses, memory cards, and tripods. You're expanding the relationship by showing related items that enhance the original purchase. Cross sell works because the buyer already trusts you and sees the obvious connection.
Upsell: Promote premium versions or upgrades. Someone bought your basic plan. Message them about the advanced plan with more features. They bought the standard model. Recommend the deluxe edition. The goal is to increase the revenue from the existing relationship. Upsell works because you've already proven value at the entry level.
Segment by purchase history and intent. For cross sell, build segments like "bought_shoes", "bought_camera", or "bought_software_starter_pack". For upsell, segment by current plan level, purchase tier, or time since first buy. Use dynamic content blocks so the same email template shows different products to different segments.
Timing is everything. Cross sell too early and you feel pushy. Wait too long and the momentum's gone. Most brands send first cross sell email within 3-5 days of purchase. Upsell works better after the buyer's gotten value from the original product. If it takes two weeks to see ROI on a plan, wait two weeks before pushing the upgrade. Test timing in your channel.
When in the journey do you use each? Cross sell is strongest right after first purchase when excitement is high. Upsell is strongest after the customer's had time to feel the limitations of their current level. A new subscriber might need 30 days to decide they need the pro plan. A new shoe buyer might be ready for socks the next morning.
