What happens when tracking cookies disappear?

If you've been segmenting based on what subscribers do on your website after they click out of an email, third-party cookies disappearing is a real disruption. Cross-site tracking, retargeting audiences, and behavioral data from ad platforms all depend on those cookies. When browsers block them or stop supporting them, that pipeline closes.

The good news is email was already more privacy-compatible than most digital channels. You own the subscriber relationship. Here's what the shift actually means in practice.

First-party data becomes your primary fuel. First-party data is anything you collect directly in your own environment: email clicks, purchase history, account activity, and survey responses. You own it, subscribers consented to it, and no browser policy affects it.

Zero-party data is a step further: it's what subscribers actively tell you. A preference center asking "what topics are you interested in?" is zero-party data. A quiz at signup asking about goals or challenges is zero-party data. Both are now the most reliable foundation for personalization, and neither requires cookies.

A preference center is probably the most practical thing you can implement today. Ask subscribers directly what they want to hear about, how often, and in what format. That data doesn't expire when a browser policy changes.

On the technical side, server-side tracking is the main alternative to browser cookies for capturing website behavior. Google Tag Manager's server-side container moves tracking off the browser and onto your infrastructure. Customer Data Platforms like Segment can unify data from email, web, and other sources without relying on client-side cookies.

Now if your site has an authenticated area where subscribers log in, that's your cleanest option. Behavior tied to a known identity doesn't depend on cookies at all.
