What tools are needed for behavioral segmentation?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Behavioral segmentation needs three things working together: a way to capture behavior, somewhere to store it, and an email platform that can act on it. Most teams use two or three tools that talk to each other. Here's what each layer does.
Your ESP is where segmentation actually happens. It needs to support dynamic segments you can update in real time, based on click history, purchase events, and custom data fields you push in. Platforms built for this kind of work include Klaviyo, Braze, Iterable, and HubSpot. They vary significantly in complexity, price, and what integrations they support. Which one fits depends on your sending volume, team size, and data sources.
An analytics or event tracking tool captures on-site behavior. Google Analytics and Mixpanel track page views, session depth, and conversion events. You push that data to your ESP via API or a native integration. Without this step, your email platform only sees what happens inside emails. It can't see what subscribers do on your site after they click through. For more on how click and interaction data works alongside on-site signals, that's worth reading next.
A Customer Data Platform (CDP) is optional but useful if your data lives in many different places. A CDP like Segment or mParticle unifies email, web, mobile, and offline data into a single subscriber profile. It's most valuable for teams managing large volumes or multiple channels at once. For smaller operations, a direct integration between your analytics tool and ESP is often enough.
For ecommerce, integrate your store platform directly. Shopify and WooCommerce both have native integrations with Klaviyo and other platforms that sync purchase and cart data automatically. You don't need to build that pipeline yourself.
One thing to check before investing in tooling: make sure the list underneath your segments is clean. Behavioral segments built on top of invalid or inactive addresses produce misleading signals and waste campaign budget. If you want a quick audit of your list health, our validation service can help.
