How to handle multilingual segmentation?

If you're sending to subscribers in multiple languages, a one-size campaign won't work. A subject line that's engaging in English often doesn't translate cleanly, and sending English content to French-speaking subscribers is a fast way to lose them.

Start by collecting language preference. You can ask at signup with a simple dropdown, infer it from the subscriber's country (with reasonable accuracy), or detect it from browser settings if your signup form has that capability. A preference center gives subscribers a way to set or correct their language later, which is worth adding.

Two main approaches to building multilingual campaigns:

Create separate segments per language and send distinct campaigns to each. More work, but cleaner workflows. You can A/B test subject lines independently per language, and your reporting is cleaner. Platforms like Braze, Iterable, and Klaviyo all support language-based segmentation natively.

Use dynamic content blocks inside a single send. Subscribers see different content based on their language attribute. Less overhead, but your ESP needs to support conditional blocks, and it's harder to preview and test every language variant before sending.

For automation workflows, you'll need to decide: one multilingual workflow with conditional branches per language, or separate workflows in each language. The latter is usually easier to maintain and audit.

One thing that catches senders out: don't stop at the email body. Subject lines, preheader text, transactional messages, unsubscribe confirmations, and re-engagement sequences all need language handling. Missing one creates a jarring experience at a moment that matters.

Before investing in multilingual infrastructure, it's worth knowing how many subscribers you actually have in each language group. If 98% of your list is English-speaking and you have 40 French subscribers, the ROI calculation looks different. A list audit can help you map that before you build.

Set up language-based segmentation for your list.

I'm setting up multilingual email segmentation for the first time. My list has subscribers who speak list your main languages. I'm using ESP name. I'm not sure whether to create separate campaigns per language or use dynamic content blocks, and I haven't collected language data systematically yet. Can you walk me through how to: (1) collect or infer language preference for my existing subscribers, (2) decide between separate campaigns vs. dynamic content for my situation, and (3) set up the segment rules in my ESP so each subscriber gets content in the right language?
