How can I tailor content based on the acquisition source? (e.g., webinar vs. lead magnet)

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

The acquisition source tells you two things: what brought someone to your list, and what they were hoping to get. That context shapes everything from your welcome email to your first three months of content.

First, capture the source data reliably. Use UTM parameters on every signup link (utm_source, utm_medium, utm_campaign). Add hidden form fields that auto-populate with the referring page or campaign code. Create separate signup forms for major channels so the source is baked in from the start. Without this infrastructure, you're guessing at attribution after the fact.

Then, use it to customize the content sequence.

Webinar subscribers signed up expecting expertise and depth. They want implementation help, not introductory material. Your welcome sequence should start at a higher level, reference the webinar topic directly, and move quickly to actionable next steps.

Lead magnet subscribers are telling you exactly what problem they want to solve. Whatever the magnet promised, the follow-up sequence should deliver on it. If the magnet was "10 ways to reduce bounce rates," your next few emails go deeper on bounce rates. You already know what they came for.

Organic search subscribers found you looking for a specific answer. They're often more research-oriented and less immediately ready to act. Educate first, offer tools or services second.

Paid ad subscribers came through a pitch. You found them. They didn't find you. They may need more relationship-building before promotional content lands well. A nurture sequence before pushing an offer often works better here.

The practical approach: create two or three welcome sequences by source category, not one universal welcome series. Your welcome sequence sets the tone for the entire relationship. Getting it wrong based on source is a missed opportunity you don't recover from easily.

So if you're just starting this and want to understand what you already have in your list, basic segmentation by source field is a quick first step. Reach out via our SOS hotline if you'd like a walk-through of your specific setup.
