What is Barracuda Reputation Blocklist?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
If your emails are bouncing at enterprise inboxes and you can't figure out why, the Barracuda Reputation Block List (BRBL) is worth checking. It's a free blocklist operated by Barracuda Networks, and because Barracuda's email security hardware is installed across thousands of corporate networks, a listing here can quietly shut the door on a huge chunk of enterprise delivery.
The BRBL works as a DNS-based blocklist for IP addresses. Organizations that use Barracuda security appliances can query BRBL as part of their filtering decisions, and many use it as a primary filter before even checking other lists. Its reputation for a very low false positive rate is part of why those organizations trust it so much.
What gets you listed? There are a few paths in. Open relays and spam proxies get flagged automatically, as does any IP that hits Barracuda's spam traps. Beyond that, Barracuda collects reputation data from its entire network of appliances. If enough of those devices are reporting your IP as a spam source, your score tips over into a listing. User-reported spam from within Barracuda devices feeds into this too.
How to check your status: Go to barracudacentral.org/lookups and enter your sending IP. It's free and instant.
How to get delisted: Head to barracudacentral.org/rbl/removal-request, enter your IP, and explain what caused the issue and what you've done to fix it. Reviews typically take 12 to 48 hours.
Before you submit that request, make sure you've actually fixed the underlying problem. Check for compromised accounts or scripts that might have been sending spam without your knowledge. Verify your SPF, DKIM, and DMARC are properly configured. Confirm you're not running an open relay. And clean your list of any invalid addresses or spam traps. If you submit a removal request without fixing the root cause, you're likely to end up back on the list quickly.
Not sure if BRBL is the only blocklist affecting you? Our free blocklist checker scans across multiple lists at once so you're not hunting one by one.
