What is cold outreach email?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

Cold outreach email is email sent to someone who doesn't know you yet. You got their email from LinkedIn, a contact database, a conference list, or similar. There's no prior relationship. You're reaching out to start one.

This is different from marketing email, where the person signed up to hear from you. With cold outreach, they didn't. That makes it legally tricky and deliverability-wise risky.

The legal side varies by country. In Europe, GDPR Legitimate Interest can sometimes cover cold B2B outreach, but only if it's genuinely relevant and low-volume. In the US, CAN-SPAM allows cold outreach as long as you follow unsubscribe rules and don't use deceptive subject lines. In Canada, CASL is stricter and often requires implied or explicit consent. (This isn't legal advice. Check with someone who actually passed the bar.)

From a deliverability standpoint, cold outreach is high-risk. Gmail, Outlook, and Yahoo all watch for emails sent to people who never interacted with your domain before. If recipients don't open, or worse, mark you as spam, your sender reputation tanks fast. This is why cold email requires flawless authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), low volume, and hyper-personalization. You can't blast 10,000 cold emails and expect anything but a blocklist.

If you're doing cold outreach, keep it under 50 emails per day per domain while warming up. Use a dedicated domain (like outreach.yourcompany.com) so your main domain stays clean. And make sure every email has a clear unsubscribe link, even if the law doesn't technically require it. Mailbox providers notice.

Get personalized cold outreach audit

I read this on the Email Almanac about cold outreach email: "Cold outreach is email sent to someone who doesn't know you yet. No prior relationship. This is different from marketing email, where the person signed up. With cold outreach, they didn't. That makes it legally tricky and deliverability-wise risky." Help me figure out if my cold outreach setup is safe and compliant. I need: 1. Legal checklist for my region (GDPR, CAN-SPAM, CASL) 2. Deliverability setup audit (authentication, domain separation, volume limits) 3. Red flags to watch (bounce rate, complaint rate, blocklisting) 4. How to fix it if my domain is already flagged My details: - Email platform/ESP: e.g. Lemlist, Woodpecker, HubSpot Sales, custom SMTP - Sending domain: your outreach domain - Daily volume: e.g. 50/day or 200/day - Target audience: e.g. B2B SaaS CTOs, HR directors at mid-sized companies - Where you got the list: [e.g. LinkedIn Sales Navigator, ZoomInfo, conference attendee list] - Current bounce/complaint rate: if known - Already on a blocklist? check at reviewmyemails.com/tools/blacklist-checker - Main concern: describe what prompted this question
