Does new domain = new start?

Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?

It's tempting to think a shiny new domain wipes the slate clean. And honestly, it does give you a blank history. But a blank history is not the same as a good reputation, and that difference matters a lot.

Mailbox providers like Gmail and Outlook treat new domains with suspicion by default. No history means no trust yet. You'll need to warm up the domain carefully, starting with low volumes and working up slowly over weeks. Skip that step and you'll burn the new domain just as fast as the old one.

Here's the real issue though. If your reputation problems were caused by your sending behavior (high complaint rates, bad list hygiene, low engagement), those behaviors travel with you. A new domain doesn't fix a broken process. It just gives you a short window to repeat the same mistakes on a clean slate.

That said, a new domain can genuinely help when the old one is unrecoverable and you've actually fixed what caused the damage. Think of it as a second chance, not a shortcut. If you're switching without changing anything else, you'll end up in the same place within months.

A few things worth noting before you make the move:

  • Your IP reputation may follow you if you're using the same ESP and shared IPs. The domain changes, but the sending infrastructure doesn't.
  • Your subscriber list behavior matters more than your domain name. If your list is full of disengaged or invalid addresses, the new domain will suffer quickly.
  • Some blocklists track organizational patterns, not just individual domains. A new domain registered by the same entity may not fool them.

If you're genuinely thinking about this move, the right question isn't "will a new domain save me?" It's "have I actually fixed what broke the old one?" If the answer is yes, a new domain with a proper warmup and clean list practices can be a real fresh start. If the answer is no, you're borrowing time.

Should I switch to a new domain?

I'm thinking about registering a new sending domain because my current one has a damaged reputation. Based on my situation, should I switch domains or try to recover the old one? Please ask me about: (1) what caused the reputation damage, (2) how old and damaged the current domain is, (3) whether I've fixed the underlying sending practices, (4) what ESP and IP setup I'm using, (5) the current state of my subscriber list. Then give me a ranked recommendation.
