How does pricing reflect validation depth?

You'll notice validation vendors have wildly different prices. A $50/month plan vs. a $500/month plan. What's the actual difference?
It comes down to the checks they're running under the hood. Here's the hierarchy:
Budget tier ($10-50/month): Basic checks. They validate syntax (is it shaped like an email?), do a DNS lookup (does the domain's mail server exist?), and cross-reference a database of known bad addresses. This catches obvious junk. But it won't catch spam traps, dormant company email accounts, or subtle delivery risks.
Mid-tier ($100-300/month): Everything above plus SMTP verification. That means actually connecting to the mail server and asking: "Is this mailbox real?" It takes more time and server resources. It's more accurate, but it also means slower API responses and your validation job takes longer. They'll likely update their disposable domain list daily or weekly instead of monthly.
Premium tier ($500+/month): Real-time, deep SMTP checks with duplicate detection, spam trap identification, and behavioral data. They're analyzing your entire sending history. They know which addresses engage, which are high-risk, which are dormant. Infrastructure costs skyrocket, so does accuracy.
Here's the real question: Do you need premium depth? If your list is fresh, built from double opt-in signups, and you already segment by engagement, a budget tool might work fine. If you're inheriting a list that's five years old or you buy third-party data, go mid-tier or higher. The ROI comes from avoiding bounces and complaints that damage your reputation.
Before you commit to a price tier, ask the vendor: "Can I test your API on my actual list?" Their answer tells you everything. A vendor confident in their accuracy will let you see results before you pay.
