What is WPBL?
Still have a question, spotted an error, or have a better explanation or a source we should cite?
Most blocklists give a simple verdict: you're listed or you're not. WPBL works differently. WPBL (Weighted Private Blocklist) assigns a score based on data pulled from multiple sources, and receiving mail servers use that score as one input in their spam filtering math rather than an outright block.
Think of it like a credit score for your sending reputation. A binary blocklist says "blocked, full stop." WPBL says "here's a number between zero and whatever, now you decide what to do with it." A mail server might only act if your score crosses a certain threshold, which means the same WPBL listing could get your email filtered at one server and ignored entirely at another.
The DNS zone is db.wpbl.info. Its deployment is limited compared to heavy-hitters like Spamhaus, so if you see it appear in a blocklist scan it's worth noting but not panicking over.
Delisting happens automatically over time as your sending behavior improves. There's no manual removal form. Fix whatever was flagged, send cleanly for a while, and the score should decay on its own.
The catch with weighted blocklists is detection. Because there's no hard bounce or rejection message that shouts "WPBL," you won't always know it's contributing to filtered mail. If your deliverability is quietly slipping and the usual suspects check out fine, running a full blocklist scan is the next move.
You can run a free check with our blocklist checker to see if anything shows up across the major lists (WPBL included). If something's there and you can't figure out why, our SOS hotline is free.
