Imagine a subscriber abandons their cart and browses a few other product pages in the same session. Your automation platform sees both events and wants to act on both. Which one wins? That's exactly what event weighting is for.
Event weighting is a prioritization system that decides which trigger gets to fire when multiple events qualify the same person for automation at the same time. Without it, you might send two competing emails, or send the lower-priority one simply because it fired a few seconds earlier.
The most common signals people weight against each other are intent level (cart abandonment signals higher purchase intent than a simple browse), recency (a newer event usually matters more than an older one), and business value (a high-ticket action beats a low-ticket one).
In practice, you assign numeric scores to your event types. Cart abandonment might score 80. Browse abandonment might score 40. When both happen in the same window, the highest score wins and the other gets suppressed. If two events tie, a tiebreaker rule kicks in (usually recency).
This isn't just about avoiding duplicate sends. It's also about protecting your subscribers from automation fatigue. The more triggers you build, the more opportunities there are for the same person to get buried in emails that don't quite match what they actually need right now.
Weighting reflects your business priorities, not just technical logic. A loyalty tier upgrade might outrank a win-back attempt. A payment failure might outrank a product recommendation. The scores you choose should map to how your business actually thinks about subscriber value and urgency.
