What is feature weighting in filtering systems?

Every spam filter looks at hundreds of signals when it decides where your email lands. Feature weighting is simply how a filter ranks those signals by importance. Some signals scream "spam." Others barely nudge the needle. The weighting system is what separates one from the other.
Think of it like a judge scoring a competition. Each criterion matters, but they don't all count equally. A filter might weight your authentication status very heavily because authenticated senders are rarely spammers. A single suspicious word in your subject line carries much less weight on its own, because that word shows up in plenty of legitimate mail too.
The weights aren't hand-coded by engineers sitting in a room. They're learned from real user behavior across millions of messages. The model figures out which signals are actually predictive and adjusts accordingly. (This is also why spam filters keep getting harder to fool over time.)
Context changes the weights too. A signal that strongly predicts spam in consumer inboxes might matter far less in a business email environment. Sophisticated filters don't apply one universal rulebook. They adjust weights based on recipient history, message category, and even the time of day.
So what does this mean for you as a sender? You can't see the exact weights, and they shift constantly as models retrain. But you can focus on the signals that consistently carry high weight across every major provider: clean authentication (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), strong engagement history, low complaint rates, and a sending pattern that doesn't spike out of nowhere. Those aren't hacks. They're the signals filters have learned to trust most.
